What even is ‘self-care’?

Many of us have been told to improve how we look after ourselves, perhaps even to make time for ‘self-care’ - but what does this look like in practice? And is it the same for everyone?

What is self-care?
Self care literally means caring for ourselves. Looking after ourselves and ensuring that we are nurtured, physically and mentally.
We thrive when our bodies and minds are looked after, this allows the restorative powers in the body to work to reduce inflammation, stress hormones and tension and improve wellbeing, productive thought patterns, digestive processes and general health.
Eating healthy foods, sleeping well, drinking enough water and reducing stress levels with adequate rest and relaxation are key to this. We often neglect these simple factors - usually by being too busy or productive - but they are the key to long-term success and happiness.
How should we do this?
Whilst we all need to look after ourselves, what this looks like might not be the same for everyone. The first step is to identify what is a positive thing or person for us. Try these deceptively simple steps:
Take some time to identify which people or practices make you feel better, restoring rather than draining you. The same goes for people - who makes you feel revived or relaxed? Who drains you or makes you anxious?
Try to spend more time doing the things that feel nurturing, and less doing those that drain your energy.
Suggestions for nurturing practices:
Time alone
Good food
Meditation
Yoga
Watching a good movie
Laughing
Chatting with good friends
Sleep
Rest
Massage
Exercise
Water
Nature
Why not start your self care journey - book some time for yourself to nurture body and mind with a relaxing massage.
